SYNOPSIS | Only the interaction of sky and earth allows for life to evolve and the landscape to bloom. The short film shows a natural spectacle turning a sparse and dry landscape into a fruitful place bearing new life. The interplay between sky and earth has allusions to a sensual love act as a metaphor to express the dependency and perfect correlation of both elements.
DIRECTOR’S NOTE | There is a feeling we all strive for in our constant quest for personal reinvention. The feeling of renewal and a new beginning that comes along with transformations we undergo in our lifes. My goal and challenge was to create a short film that would provoke such a feeling in the audience by the means of landscapes – those versatile spaces with the potential to captivate.
Below you can watch a detailed breakdown for the visuals and see how much love and energy went into the creation of this piece. All in all it took me more than a year to complete it including animatic and concept phase.
I tried to get the best from every technique (3D models and simulation, 2D painting and comp-atmosphere, 2.5D footage elements, timelapse footage) and combine everything at the compositing stage, where I propably spent most of my time on this project.
Breakdown:
A challenge in Natural Attraction were the great number of simulations including clouds, fog and mist, water, debris, fire and magma. For those effects I mostly used TurbulenceFD and X-Particles in Cinema 4D. Oftentimes I combined multiple versions of a simulation in compositing (After Effects) to get the desired look, instead of trying to achieve one perfect simulation.
I used a very iterative worklflow, sending all WIP-elements like for matte painting or simulations to After Effects early on, in order to get an impression of the final look as soon as possible, which then could be tweaked on.
To create the landscapes in an efficient way I tried to get the maximum from digital matte painting and projection techniques. All terrains started as sculpted 3D models. I then rendered a rough multi-pass base from that to continue in photoshop, by using e.g. further simple renderings of the geometry with different textures. Of course I could also have created a compound material for the base rendering in Cinema 4D, but layering, tweaking and masking in Photoshop works much faster for me.
Afterwards the painting would be projected back on the sculpted model and by preserving some of my photoshop passes (like ambient light, sunlight etc.) I still had control over the painting in After Effects. For example I could mask the sunlight pass with a 3D rendered cloud shadow pass and thus turn a static painting into a landscape with dynamic lighting.
