Siggraph 2014 Rewind - Casey Hupke, Day 01: How to Recreate the Meteor from Final Fantasy
In this presentation, Casey Hupke of Zoic Studios pays homage to Final Fantasy 7, demonstrating techniques for creating the iconic meteor blast from the game.
You’ll see how the shockwave is created using Displacer and animated noise in World Space. R16 Reflectance is used to texture the shockwave, which is completed using a MoGraph Cloner, the Random and Step Effectors.
In creating the Meteor, you’ll see how Fracture combines with MoGraph effectors for an explosive effect, and how displacement is used to create the rock-like appearance.

In this presentation, Casey Hupke of Zoic Studios pays homage to Final Fantasy 7, demonstrating techniques for creating the iconic meteor blast from the game.
Continuing from his progress on Day 1, Casey demonstrates the creation of the Life Stream and Fire effects for the meteor using X Particles 2. You’ll learn how the Hair Render and Scene Motion Blur can be used to effectively render smooth particle trails. You’ll also learn various techniques for building and caching an X-Particles simulation.
